The Coast Guard icebreaker Amundsen, shown here in Kugluktuk Aug. 12, completed a rescue mission Aug. 29, leaving the Beaufort Sea to help the crew and passengers of the MV Clipper Adventurer, which became grounded Aug. 27 after hitting an uncharted rock 55 nautical miles east of Kugluktuk. The Clipper Adventurer was en route to Kugluktuk from Port Epworth. The ship, which is outfitted with an ice-reinforced hull, carried about 120 passengers when the mishap occurred. “At the time, the seas were calm, sunny conditions and good visibility with no wind or swell. Efforts of the vessel's crew to dislodge the vessel during high tide on August 28th were unsuccessful,” says an Aug. 29 update on the Adventure Canada website. “The vessel now rests with a slight list. Conditions are stabilized.” None of the passengers and 69 crew members were injured, the company said. They were expected to head from Kugluktuk to Edmonton on the evening of Aug. 29 or early on Aug. 30. (PHOTO BY JANE GEORGE)
