Nunavut officials have warned residents of Sanikiluaq with respiratory problems to stay clear of the community’s dump after it caught fire earlier this week.

A fire that started in the wood disposal section of the local dump has been extinguished, although it continues to produce smoke, the Government of Nunavut said in a July 27 release.

The GN advised residents with heart or lung disease, asthma, elders, children and pregnant woman to avoid any exposure to the smoke.

Those people should stay indoors as much as possible and keep the windows and doors of their homes closed.

Any residents who experience trouble breathing or tightness in the chest should call or visit the local health centre, health officials said.
