One of two travellers “unaccounted for”

Rangers and aircraft have been called in to help search for a missing teenage hunter from Pond Inlet.

The young man has been missing since Feb. 9.

The RCMP received notice of search in the early morning hours of Feb. 10, according to Inspector Don Halina of the V Division in Iqaluit.

Two hunters travelling together by snowmobile and dog team were overdue in returning to the community, Halina said.

“They became separated, and one is still unaccounted for,” Halina said Feb. 11.

Weather conditions in Pond Inlet and the surrounding area were described as “poor” on Feb. 11, with high winds and low visibility, the RCMP said.

Police could not give the name or age of the lost hunter, although some reports say he is only 13.

The Mittimatalik hunters and trappers organization confirmed a search crew was out looking for the lost individual on Feb. 11.
