Seal celebration this weekend in Nunavut’s capital
Annual event to take place Saturday afternoon at Iqaluit Square
While people around the world continue to struggle over whether killing seals for food or clothing is humane or even necessary, Nunavummiut plan to celebrate the keystone species with an event planned for Saturday afternoon in Iqaluit.
The seventh annual Celebration of the Seal will unfold from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Iqaluit Square, near the elders’ qammaq.
“Come out to celebrate the importance of the seal to Inuit and join us for a feast of seal and Arctic char,” says a June 25 news release from the Government of Nunavut’s environment department.
Along with the food, participants will be treated to drum dancing, Inuit games, throat singing and seal skinning.
The GN, and partner Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., are encouraging people to wear sealskin clothing to the event. Prizes will be given for the most beautiful outfits.
