Nunavut students training to work in aviation can apply this month for scholarships offered through the Government of Nunavut and regional airlines, the GN said Aug.6.

Nunavummiut students training to work in the industry out of northern airports are eligible for scholarships of $5,000 sponsored through the governments of Nunavut and the Northwest Territories and through airlines Discovery Air, Keewatin Air and North-Wright Air.

“Air travel is a necessity in Nunavut,” said George Kuksuk, Nunavut’s minister of Economic Development and Transportation, in an Aug. 6 release.

“The Government of Nunavut encourages more Nunavummiut to develop careers in the aviation industry and this scholarship gives them a step up as they access the required training.”

The program, once only available in the NWT, has been open to Nunavut students since 2011.

Recipients of past scholarships have gone on to careers such as airport operations specialists, airport managers, aircraft maintenance engineers and pilots.

The Northern Aviation Scholarship is available to full-time residents of Nunavut.

Students must apply by Aug. 29 for this month’s intake or by Sept. 26 for the final intake of the year.
