Sanikiluaq teacher likely to face more sex charges
Johnny Meeko, 58, makes first appearance Aug. 20 at Nunavut Court of Justice
The Sanikiluaq elementary school teacher, Johnny Meeko, charged Aug. 14 with 29 sex offences alleged to have occurred between 1984 and 2006, involving eight complainants, is likely to face additional charges.
Meeko, 58, appeared Aug. 20 at the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit, where his lawyer, Mark Christie, asked for postponement of a bail hearing until Friday, Aug. 24.
It is unknown how many more charges will be laid against Meeko, since lawyers are waiting for more information to be submitted by the RCMP.
Meeko showed up to the courthouse in handcuffs. Wearing faded blue sweatpants and a blue tee-shirt, he smiled briefly in court.
Meeko has taught at Nuiyak Elementary School in Sanikiluaq since 1973, where police allege all the offences occurred.
