Remains of Nunavut couple found near Coral Harbour
RCMP say they're not treating deaths as suspicious in "obviously accidental" incident
A Coral Harbour search and rescue team has found the lifeless remains of two young people who went missing last week.
The bodies of Darren Eetuk, 25, and Julia Nakoolak, 18, were found in a river 20 kilometres northeast of the community, on June 22.
Nunavut RCMP spokesperson Yvonne Niego said the case is not being treated as suspicious, but an investigation is still technically active.
Niego did not know if an autopsy has been ordered for the two.
However, she said the incident was “obviously accidental.”
Coral Harbour search and rescuers started looking for the couple June 19 when the two didn’t return from a hunting trip.
“Family had become concerned when their all-terrain vehicle was located with no signs of the individuals,” Niego said.
Niego said the RCMP worked with local search and rescue and Nunavut Emergency Management to locate the couple, even using an aircraft at one point.
