Police in Arviat have arrested a man after an early morning firearms incident.
After receiving a call about 12:45 a.m. Aug. 27, members of the RCMP in Arviat learned that two brothers had been fighting.
One of the men allegedly retrieved a rifle, went outside and fired rounds in the air, RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Greg Sutherland told Nunatsiaq News on Aug. 27..
The rifle was left behind at the residence and police located and arrested a man without incident at about 2 a.m., Sutherland said.
Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be factors, he said.
Peter Alatsiak, 24, has been charged with careless use of a firearm and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, the RCMP said Aug. 28.
“Fortunately, Arviat had three police officers in the community at the time of this incident, which greatly enhanced their ability to respond to these extremely dangerous and ever more common situations,” said Supt. Hilton Smee.
