Police wrap up investigation in Kuujjuaraapik murder-suicide
"Jealousy was likely at the root of the incident" that left two men dead
KUUJJUAQ — Two men died in Kuujjuaraapik in a late-night incident involving firearms that took place in the community March 7.
A man with a firearm shot at a second man, killing him, the Surêté du Québec provincial police force confirmed March 8.
The man then turned the firearm on himself, dying by suicide, Létourneau said.
Police, who were called in at about 11 p.m. Wednesday night, treated the incident as a murder-suicide.
On March 9, Sgt. Genéviève Bruneau of the SQ indentified the two deceased men as Victor Sam Weetaltuk, 22, who died of the first gunshot wound, and Aakava Horne, 32, who then turned the firearm on himself to commit suicide.
“Jealousy was likely at the root of the incident,” said Bruneau.
The bodies of the two men have been sent to Montreal for autopsies.
But Bruneau said no charges are expected to be laid in conjunction with the deaths of the two men, which she called a fairly “clear situation.”
“A tragedy,” is how one Kuujjuaraapik resident called the incident, which left the community, and many others throughout Nunavik, in shock.
