A 53-year-old Puvirnituq man faces a manslaughter charge following the death of another man early May 30.
Michael Amamatuak appeared in Quebec court in Amos June 2. He has yet to enter a plea but will remain in detention until his next court date, Crown prosecutor Thierry Potvin said.
Amamatuak was arrested late May 29 after the Kativik Regional Police Force responded to an altercation at a Puvirnituq home involving Amamatuak and 34-year-old Moses Eqilaq.
It’s not clear what led to the argument, but a fight broke out between the two men sometime after 10:00 p.m.
Eqilaq was taken to Inuulitsivik hospital with serious injuries, but died early the next morning, Quebec provincial police confirmed May 30.
The Sûreté du Québec flew a team into the Hudson Bay community of about 1,700 people May 30 to investigate the incident.
Although Nunavik has its own regional police force, the SQ is called on to investigate major crimes.
Amamatuak will appear in court again June 6.
