PM Harper appoints new deputy minister for AAND
Colleen Swords replaces veteran DM Michael Wernick
After serving eight years as deputy minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, Michael Wernick will move on to other duties later this month, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced July 11.
Wernick has served as deputy minister of AAND since May 2006.
On July 21, he will become a special advisor to the Privy Council Office, the prime minister’s office said.
His replacement, veteran civil servant Colleen Swords, will move into the top non-elected job at AAND, also on July 21, from the Department of Canadian Heritage, where she now serves as deputy minister.
Between 2009 and 2013, Swords served as an associate deputy minister at AAND and from September to December 2011, served as interim president of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency.
