NUNATSIAQ NEWS
While Ottawans might have celebrated Canada Day with hamburgers and Beavertails, northerners did it northern style: with maktaaq. Hunter George Kauki, left, carves up maktaaq in Kuujjuaq from a beluga he harvested near Kangiqsujuaq with friend Saanti Jaaka. Kauki decided to share the catch with Kuujjuamiut as they gathered on the beach for Canada Day celebrations, to keep alive the Inuit tradition of sharing traditional foods with neighbours.
