Iqaluit youth paint skateboard decks before trying them out in the city's skate park. What started as an annual arts week in Iqaluit five years ago has grown into Nunavut Youth Arts month, with art activities planned for six different Nunavut communities. Iqaluit resident Pascale Arpin spearheaded the initiative, aided this year with funding from the Michaele Jean Arts Foundation and Nunavut's department of Economic Development and Transportation. This year, Cape Dorset, Coral Harbour, Baker Lake, Sanikiluaq, Rankin Inlet and Iqaluit are participating in the activities. About 50 youth in Iqaluit attended workshops such as T-shirt transformation, nails, beading and chain-making. Those workshops led up to the final week (May 21 to May 28), which featured a daily skateboard workshop where youths could design, paint and then try out their own skateboards. This year Arpin focused on training youth to take over leadership roles in the annual event, and on sharing its model with other communities. (PHOTO BY THOMAS ROHNER)
