Photo: Online exhibit showcases Amundsen artifacts

NUNATSIAQ NEWS
Nunavummiut need not fly to Norway anymore to glimpse historical artifacts from one of the 20th century's most influential non-Inuit Arctic figures, polar explorer Roald Amundsen. That's thanks to a new online exhibit curated in partnership by the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo and the Nattilik Heritage Centre in Gjoa Haven. Visitors to the site can view photographs, documents and other items collected by Amundsen between 1903 and 1905 as he and his six-person crew on the Gjøa made their historic journey through the Northwest Passage. Amundsen spent two winters on southeastern King William Island during his journey—anchored in the harbour that would eventually bear the name of his ship—collecting items and documenting his experiance with local Netsilik Inuit. To see the collection for yourself, visit the webpage at: http://www.khm.uio.no/english/research/collections/gjoahaven/. (PHOTO COURTESY OF THE COLLECTION)
