Quttiktuq MLA Ron Elliott speaks March 4 in the Nunavut legislature against a motion seeking an extension to the review period for Bill 40, the Representative for Children and Youth Act. The motion, put forward by Nanulik MLA Johnny Ningeongan, chair of the committee of the whole, asked for 120 more days of consultation before the act, which would create an independent child and youth advocate office in Nunavut, moves ahead. Also speaking against the motion for an extended review: Premier Eva Aariak who said

Also speaking against the motion for an extended review: Premier Eva Aariak who said "we have heard from Nunavummiut, including members within this house, that a representative for children and youth is much needed in Nunavut." In a recorded tie-breaking vote, Speaker Hunter Tootoo cast a vote for the motion. A disappointed Aariak said afterwards that it is "unfortunate" the act will be delayed even longer.
