Malaya Roberts gets a kiss from her mother, Dominique Wielgosch, Jan. 24. Born to a Rankin Inlet family and adopted by Wielgosch at birth in 1991, Roberts was raised in the Kivallliq and Iqaluit until she left with her family for northern Ontario when she was a teenager. A swimming accident in 2011 severed her spinal cord and rendered her quadriplegic. Now 22, she lives in a long-term care hospital in Ottawa and hoping, soon, to move into an assisted-living apartment, where she can regain a little independence.
