Seven Greenpeace International activists head Aug. 27 toward a giant drilling platform in the Russian Arctic for the second time in three days. The activists, in two high-speed boats, intercepted a supply vessel as it prepared to drop off the workers to the oil platform run by Russia's gas and oil company, Gazprom. Greenpeace says it wants to take "peaceful action against Gazprom’s work in the Arctic" to highlight the dangers of its plans to drill in the Pechora Sea and to protest the platform's role in commercially producing offshore Arctic oil "anywhere on the planet." A similar action took place last summer off western Greenland to protest oil development there. (PHOTO COURTESY OF GREENPEACE)
