The voice everyone in Nunavik respects: the Salluit elder and veteran broadcaster at the Taqramiut Nipingat Inc. radio network in Nunavik, Elashuk Pauyungie, speaks Sept. 18 in Kuujjuaq to a group of teachers from Nunavik's Ungava Bay communities. Pauyungie told the teachers about life in the years before schools were established in the region, when “we were just Inuit, living our lives,” and Inuit kids learned by watching, not from school work. Then, children learned everything they needed to succeed and thrive, such as building an igloo. “That’s how successful and stable we were,” she said. (PHOTO BY JANE GEORGE)
