NUNATSIAQ NEWS
An anxious parent: A long-tailed jaeger, sometimes called an Arctic skua, tries to fend off intruders from her chick’s nest, located about 20 kilometres east and inland from Arctic Bay. Jaegers are sometimes referred to as “avian pirates” for their deft skills stealing food from other birds. The birds often nest in colonies along the tundra, although this family was found alone July 16. (PHOTO BY CLARE KINES)
