Organizer makes last minute call for Nunavummiut to join June 21 food price protests
"It is in our blood to help those who are hungry, let’s not forget that"
“Hear ye, Hear ye, Hear ye, Peaceful Protest on Thursday June 21, 2012,” says Leesee Papatsie, the force behind the “Feeding My Family” movement to protest the high cost of food in Nunavut.
But unlike the town criers of old who used to wander around colonial villages bellowing out the news, Papatsie used the popular “Feeding My Family” Facebook page to get the message out.
A demonstration in Iqaluit is to take place today between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. near the Northmart store.
“We would like Nunavummiut to stand together again to say one thing. High Cost of Food in Nunavut. We are asking Nunavummiut and supporters to come and support us, we can do this together,” Papatsie said.
Similar protests are planned in Pangnirtung, Igloolik, Kugluktuk, Coral Harbour and Ottawa, where protesters in front of the Parliament buildings will be joined by retired members of the United States military who were stationed in Resolute Bay in 1950s, she said.
“We are getting supporters from all over the world. We would like to thank them all and to the folks in Nunavut, without you guys, this group would not have succeeded. This site was made for you guys, we need your help to stand together,” she said.
“We have to keep trying again and again. We have to do this for our family, elders, our children and our children’s children. Thinking about doing a protest in your community? Talk to other people in your community, they might be thinking the same thing, go for it,” said Papatsie, adding that she was “so, so proud of you Nunavummiut now.”
“You have spoken up, keep speaking up, even if you say it in your sleep, and you guys have already taken a step forward. You are sharing how hard it is with high cost of food in Nunavut. It is in our blood to help those who are hungry, let’s not forget that. We want to thank everyone who had helped us, remember to thank people and welcome them to our group.”
On June 21 “Feeding my Family” also launched its new website.
