Nunavut teachers fined after pleading guilty to liquor possession charges
Three people to pay fines ranging from $600 to $1,000 each
Two teachers and a vice-principal in the Nunavut community of Coral Harbour have pleaded guilty to Nunavut Liquor Act charges and will now pay fines as a result.
Teachers Jessica Evans and Erin Sallie pleaded guilty April 30 to unlawful possession of liquor and were each ordered to pay a fine of $1,000.
Rick Aucoin, the Sakku school’s vice-principal, pleaded guilty to the same offence April 30 and was ordered to pay a $600 fine.
Under the Liquor Act, the penalty for this offence ranges from $500 to $5,000, up to 30 days in jail, or both, depending on the severity of the offence.
In Coral Harbour, alcohol is prohibited. Other prohibited communities in Nunavut include Arviat, Gjoa Haven, Kugaaruk, Pangnirtung and Sanikiluaq.
Staff at Nunavut’s education department did not return our calls by day’s end May 5 when Nunatsiaq News contacted them to ask if the teachers would suffer any consequences.
“Teachers shall comply with any code of ethics adopted by the Nunavut Teachers Association and shall conduct themselves in such a manner as to maintain the prestige of their profession so that no dishonour may befall them or their professional through their actions,” section 95 of the territory’s Education Act says.
An online copy of the Nunavut Teachers Association’s code of ethics mostly governs a teacher’s conduct while on the job.
It does say that a member of the association, “will adhere to any reasonable pattern of behavior acceptable by the profession,” and also, “will, by his or her example, make the teaching profession attractive in ideals and practices so that worthy people will want to enter it.”
Another statement in the code says that a member “conducts himself/herself during school hours in such a manner as to maintain the prestige of the profession so that no dishonour may befall him/her or his/her profession through his/her actions.”
It does not mention behaviour outside of school hours.
