Nunavik’s Avataq to offer Inuktitut courses in Montreal
Courses are to be offered for beginning and more advanced students
Inuktituuriursarumaviit? Nunavik’s Avataq Cultural Institute is offering beginner and intermediate Inuktitut lessons this fall in Montreal for anyone interested in studying the Inuit language.
Avataq will start an introductory Inuktitut course starting later this month out of its St. Catherine St. office in Montreal.
The institute will also offer a more advanced course for those who already have basic Inuktitut skills.
The courses are part of a “renewed commitment to encourage the learning of Inuktitut as a second language,” Avataq said in a release.
The courses will be taught by Georges Filotas, a fluent Inuktitut speaker and a former manager of the Fédération des Coopérative du Nouveau-Québec.
Filotas first learned to speak the language in Kangirsuk during the early 1970s.
The material in the courses will build on courses that Filotas offered in 2012 through the Montreal Children’s Hospital.
If you’re curious to see what the courses will look like, Avataq is hosting an information session Monday, Sept. 16, at 5:30 p.m at its offices at 4150 St. Catherine St. W., suite 360.
Beginner courses run Tuesday evenings starting, Sept. 24, while Level 2 classes run Thursdays, starting Sept. 26 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The ten-week session costs $250.
