Northwestel to offer DSL internet in Rankin Inlet next month
Company reps in Rankin Feb. 8 to Feb. 10.
Northwestel said Jan. 28 that they’ll offer a 2.5 Mbps DSL internet service in Rankin Inlet starting next month.
It’s identical to a new service the company brought to Cambridge Bay in mid-January, and provides Rankin Inlet residents with the fastest internet speeds ever offered in their community.
The service will cost $129.95 per month, and customers must already have a phone line.
Northwestel representatives will be available in Rankin Inlet between Feb. 8 and Feb. 10 and plan to host a community event at the local Northern store.
At the same time, the company will also offer a bundled package that includes unlimited long distance calling within Nunavut at a rate that start as low as $1 a month, plus unlimited North American long distance calling at $10.95 per month.
The company will supply DSL modems at no extra cost to customers. Their new modems include a built-in wireless router that customers can use to create household wifi networks.
In an interview with Nunatsiaq News in January, Northwestel’s CEO, Paul Flaherty, said it’s unlikely that Northwestel will offer DSL internet beyond Iqaluit, Rankin Inlet and Cambridge Bay for the forseeable future.
That’s because of the prohibitive cost of satellite bandwidth in Nunavut, the small size of the territory’s communities, and competition provided by Qiniq.
