Quebec provincial police have launched an investigation into the arrest of a Kuujjuaq man who faces life-threatening injuries after throwing himself from a police cruiser.

Kativik Regional Police Force officers responded to a report of domestic violence at a Kuujjuaq home June 17 at 3 p.m., the Sûreté du Québec said.

Officers intervened and put a man into their vehicle. On the drive back to the KRPF police station, the vehicle made a stop, at which point the suspect threw himself out of the vehicle over an elevated walkway.

The SQ said June 22 that the man remains in critical condition.

Any time a detainee in Quebec is injured while in police custody, the province’s Department of Public Security requires an outside police force to investigate the responding force’s conduct.

In this case, the SQ continues to investigate the incident.
