Iqaluit woman dies in Ottawa following Feb. 3 beating
Kathy Michael received "severe head injuries" Feb. 3
An Iqaluit woman has died in an Ottawa hospital as a result of injuries inflicted Feb. 3 during a brutal beating in Iqaluit, sources have confirmed to Nunatsiaq News.
A Feb. 7 RCMP news release that did not identify the injured woman said police found her at an Iqaluit residence after they responded to a call at about 8:10 p.m. Feb. 3.
At the same time, they arrested a man who they also found at the residence.
The woman, who sources have identified as Kathy Michael, was medevaced to Ottawa suffering “severe head injuries” after first being treated at the Qikiqtani General Hospital.
Pitseola Peter, 50, was charged with aggravated assault and failure to comply with a probation order. He was to have appeared in court Feb. 6 and Feb.18 in Iqaluit.
Neither prosecutors nor police have yet indicated whether the assault charge might be upgraded to either murder or manslaughter.
Peter’s next court appearance is scheduled for March 5.
