Iqaluit man charged with arson in Jan. 5 Creekside fire
Saimo Kopalie, 25, remanded into custody
Police have laid charges of arson and mischief against an Iqaluit man in connection with a fire that broke out in the early morning hours of Jan. 5 at a one-bedroom rowhouse unit in the 600 block of the Creekside Village complex.
At the time, Iqaluit firefighters were able to contain the fire to the bedroom where the fire broke out.
Police also alerted tenants of other housing units in the same block and helped them get outside until the fire was extinguished.
Saimo Kopalie, 25, of Iqaluit, who faces charges of arson and mischief in connection with this incident, has been remanded into custody.
Also in January, Iqaluit city councilors, alarmed by a rash of suspicious fires, asked for action on arson.
In February 2012, a 22-unit block of rowhouses at Creekside Village burned to the ground, killing two people and dislocating many others.
