Iqaluit firefighters douse mid-morning landfill fire
Burning debris covered about 150 square metres
The City of Iqaluit’s fire department quickly put out a fire that broke out during the late morning hours of Jan. 11 at the Iqaluit landfill site.
The fire was discovered by municipal enforcement officers at about 10:30 a.m., a City of Iqaluit news release said.
About 10 minutes later, the first fire truck arrived, and found burning debris covering an area of about 150 square metres.
The fire was located close to the main entrance and was easily accessible to fire crews, who brought the fire under control within 30 minutes.
Three public works water trucks supplied water and employees at the landfill helped fire crews with bulldozers to help extinguish the fire.
Fire crews left the landfill at around noon.
The cause of the fire is unknown, and there were no injuries to report.
