“Choose your head,” encourages Nunavik safety campaign
Contest offers 100 helmets to Nunavimmiut youth
Nunavik’s off-highway vehicle safety campaign has 100 helmets to give away to young drivers this month.
Nunavik’s prevention and awareness campaign for off-highway vehicle safety’s latest initiative is asking Nunavimmiut youth to “choose your head” when riding a snowmobile or an all-terrain vehicle.
“Last year, we went into all 14 communities and did prevention workshops,” said project manager Marie-Eve Marchand, adding that she saw few helmets being worn. “After visiting those communities, we thought that a contest offering them as prizes would have more impact.”
Starting this week, youth between 14 and 20 years of age can log onto the contest webpage.
There, participants must answer a multiple choice question for a chance to win one of 100 helmets, donated by retailers in Kuujjuaq and Montreal.
And once those helmets start circulating through Nunavik communities, Marchand hopes they’ll encourage helmet use among young snowmobile and ATV drivers.
There’s plenty at stake, Marchand said— in Quebec, more than half of all OHV accidents result in head trauma.
And in Nunavik, OHV accidents are the main cause of injuries among Nunavimmiut youth under 18.
Marchand admits there is still the “cool” factor that prevents many people from using helmets.
“But young people always wear them to play hockey, or to snowboard, so we hope that thinking can transfer to skidoos and ATVs,” she said.
Nunavimmiut can enter the contest until March 14. Winners will be drawn from the correct entries on March 27.
Marchand encourages entrants to also check out the rest of the newly-launched On the Right Path Nunavik website, which offers tools, statistics and regular contests for OHV drivers.
