Seven detainees face charges following a police investigation of the two Nov. 12 fires at the Baffin Correctional Centre in Iqaluit.

“During the investigation, police discovered that an inmate was also assaulted at the same time,” the RCMP said Nov. 23.

Herbert Janes and Willie Ishulutak of Iqaluit, along with Sylvester Tarraq of Baker Lake, who appeared in the Nunavut Court of Justice on Nov. 23, have been charged with arson endangering life and aggravated assault.

They will return to the Nunavut Court of Justice Dec. 4 for a first appearance.

Charges have also been laid against four other men, who face charges of aggravated assault:  Arnaitok Nuvaqiq, Anawalkooloo Michael, William Auksaq and Geteonie Kopalie, all of Iqaluit.

They are scheduled to appear Nov. 27 at the Nunavut Court of Justice for a show cause hearing.

All seven men remain in custody, the RCMP said.
