CAMBRIDGE BAY — Cambridge Bay’s arena has a new name.

The hamlet council passed a resolution on Oct. 10 to name the Cambridge Bay arena the “Cambridge Bay Youth Recreation Complex.”

Dave and Mona Taylor, the parents of Nathan Ookpik Taylor, 15, of Cambridge Bay, who died Sept. 13, 2011, when his dirt bike collided with a pick-up truck near the community airport, had hoped the arena would be named “Ookpik’s Youth Memorial Arena Complex” to remember their son.

“The issue has been debated thoroughly throughout the year and Council believes they have come to a satisfactory decision to celebrate and recognize youth in the community,” said an Oct. 11 news release. “Special thanks to the Taylor family for their efforts in bringing this issue to the forefront, and to the Elders, Youth and residents who expressed their views on this issue.”
