Avataq Cultural Institute seeks students for new Inuktitut-language courses
Inuktitut language expert Georges Filotas will teach program
If you want to learn Inuktitut, now you can — in downtown Montreal, thanks to courses offered through Nunavik’s Avataq Cultural Institute.
The 10-week courses, set to start Feb. 19 and Feb. 21, will include two levels, one for beginners, the other for those who already have some basic knowledge of Inuktitut.
They’ll be taught by Georges Filotas, a fluent speaker of Inuktitut, who first learned to speak the language in Kangirsuk during the early 1970s.
The material in the courses will build on courses that Filotas offered last year through the Montreal Children’s Hospital.
You can learn more about these courses at information sessions Feb. 12 and 14 at Avataq’s Montreal offices located at 4150 St. Catherine St. West, suite 360 in Westmount (Atwater metro, facing Westmount Square).
The beginners’ course starts Feb. 19, with the Level II course scheduled to start up Feb. 21.
Each weekly course lasts three hours, with the cost for the entire 10 week-session set at $250.
Groups will be limited to 10 to 12 participants
“If you are interested in taking up the challenge of learning Inuktitut, you are invited to attend one of the two information sessions that will be held on February 12th and 14th, starting at 5:30 p.m in the offices of the Avataq Cultural Institute,” an Avataq news release says. “Information will be provided at this time on the syllabus as well as on other aspects of the course.”
