A tragic end for young Pond Inlet hunter
Crews discover body of Pond Inlet hunter Feb.12
RCMP in Nunavut say search crews in Pond Inlet have found the body of a missing hunter.
The young hunter, whose name has yet to be released, left his home by dog team Feb. 9, along with another hunter who was travelling by snowmobile.
But the pair got separated at some point, and the missing hunter and his dog team did not make it back to camp that night.
Pond Inlet’s Mittimatalik hunters and trappers organization coordinated a search crew over the next couple of days, although poor weather conditions hampered their efforts.
Canadian Rangers and aircraft assisted the search early Feb.12, the same day the victim’s body was discovered.
It’s not clear where the hunter was located, or if his dog team was found.
Police could not give the name or age of the lost hunter, although some reports say he is only 13.
In a Feb. 12 news release, the RCMP said it will assist the Office of the Chief Coroner with their investigation into this death.
