Iqaluit-Nuuk will host 2002 winter
games

IQALUIT — Iqaluit will jointly host the 2002 Arctic Winter Games
with Nuuk, Greenland.
The AWG International Committee announced this week that it has tentatively
accepted a bid by the communities to co-host the popular sports competition.
"These games will be a unique opportunity to showcase the Arctic
Winter Games in Greenland and the new Canadian territory of Nunavut,"
said committee president Gerry Thick.
The last time the games were shared by two communities was in 1978, when
Hay River co-hosted with Pine Point.
The two communities still have a number of logistical hurdles to cross,
including travel and event co-ordination. Each community is also expected
to have to rely heavily on volunteers to pull off the event.
