Over-harvesting worries
LIA
Nunatsiaq News
IQALUIT Over-hunting and over-fishing by some members
of Labrador Inuit Association are a major worry for the organizations
board of directors.
The LIA newsletter, Nunatsiavut, says that at its June meeting
the LIA board heard reports of some members taking 15 to 20 Canada
geese, hundreds of char and "excessive amounts of bird eggs."
One director said he favoured closing traditional hunting and
fishing seasons instead of allowing over-harvesting.
"If we keep going at this rate our wildlife management board
wont have any wildlife to manage," another director
said.
The LIA board decided to launch an information campaign on sound
hunting and fishing practices, as well as an education program
to teach youth how to hunt and fish properly.
