Name game continues

Nunatsiaq News

IQALUIT — Iqaluit’s street-naming project is one step closer to completion.

At last week’s city council meeting, Iqaluit fire chief Neville Wheaton released a map of Iqaluit’s soon-to-be street names.

Major thoroughfares like the Ring Road, Apex Road, the Federal Road and the Road to Nowhere will retain the same names.

Several streets were named for famous residents who lived along them, including Ben Ell Drive in Lower Base, Bill MacKenzie Lane in Apex, and Al Woodhouse Street near the Navigator Inn.

Other roads honour Arctic explorers, like Baffin Road and Frobisher Street in Happy Valley.

In Tundra Ridge, the roads are named for animals. For example, there’s Tuktu (caribou) Street, Nanuq (polar bear) Crescent and Aqiggiq (ptarmigan) Court.

A few names are sure to amuse. There’s Masak (damp place) Court, where the trailer homes are located off the Federal Road. In front of the Mariner Lodge is Igunaq (fermented walrus meat) Street. And in Apex, alongside Tarr Inlet, is Aliqsiik (duffle socks) Lane.
