Money for rocks in Nunavik

Nunatsiaq News

IQALUIT — The Nunavik Mineral Exploration Fund is holding its second annual rock contest to reward new mineral discoveries in Nunavik.

The rocks submitted must be the "size of a fist," and, according to the contest rules, must be new discoveries –not samples from known deposits.

Entries must include a map of each sample’s location and a completed application form, which is available from municipal offices.

Shipping the rocks to Kuujjuaq is at the participants’ expense, but there’s no limit on the number of samples that can be submitted.

The first prize of $2,500 is sponsored by the giant mining companies Falconbridge Ltd. and Noranda. The second prize of $2,000 is sponsored by WMC, an Australian company that has been looking for copper near Kuujjuaq.

The contest ends on Oct. 31.
