Arvaluk appeal postponed

IQALUIT The appeal hearing in the case of James Arvaluk
wont take place until next year.
The Nunavut Court of Appeals will decide in January when to hear
the appeal. The Crown is appealing Arvaluks acquittal in
June on a charge of assault causing bodily harm.
Arvaluk, the MLA for Nanulik, was acquitted of having beaten
and injured Sophie Sangoya, his former live-in girlfriend, in
a drunken fight Aug. 26, 2000, in Coral Harbour.
Meanwhile, Arvaluk will stand trial next month on another charge
of assaulting the same woman in Iqaluit Aug. 22.
The trial will be held Oct. 18 in Iqaluit.
