Norwegian whalers do well

Nunatsiaq News

IQALUIT —This year's whale hunt was a success for Norwegian whalers, though it got off to a slow start because of poor weather in May.

"As of today only three whales remain from this year's quota, and these will in all likelihood be taken, too," said Ole Myklebust, a Norwegian whaler.

Norwegian whalers are allowed to hunt 549 Minke whales from two stocks totaling 184,000 animals. Some 30 boats participated in this year's hunt.

The domestic market in Norway welcomes Minke whale meat.

"The demand has been even higher this year. The tragedy of the 'mad cow' disease might have been an influence. This is a trend we see in all kinds of products from the sea, as consumers demand safe food," Myklebust said.
