Hunter dies of burns

Nunatsiaq News

IQALUIT — An American hunter has died from burns he suffered in a cabin fire near Cambridge Bay last month.

J.J. Hampson, of Lancaster, Ohio, died Aug. 30 at the University of Alberta hospital in Edmonton.

Hampson suffered burns over 80 per cent of his body when a camp stove exploded in a hunting cabin near the Ellice River, 125 kilometres southeast of Cambridge Bay, Aug. 26.

Two other American hunters and a cook from Ontario were also burned in the explosion. All three are recovering at the University of Alberta hospital.

Three more American hunters who also were in the cabin escaped uninjured.
Cambridge Bay RCMP and the Nunavut fire marshall's office are investigating the blaze.
