Nunavut's legal pioneers

Nunatsiaq News

IQALUIT — Nunavut's new law school students gathered Tuesday at the Nunavut Arctic College campus in Iqaluit to mark the start of their first academic year. Arctic College instructor Alexina Kublu, left, and law student Elisapee Karetak lit a qulliq before festivities began.

At the opening ceremony, which was linked by a video-conference connection to the University of Victoria's Faculty of Law, the 15 Inuit accepted into the Akitsiraq Law School introduced themselves and their professors.

Chosen from more than 100 applicants are:
Henry Coman;
Siobhan Arnatsiaq-Murphy;
Lalena Flaherty;
Madeleine Redfern;
Naomi Wilman;
Cindy Kudloo;
Lillian Aglukark;
Elisapee Karetak;
Aaju Peter;
Nigel Qaumariaq;
Lucy Grey;
Susan Enuaraq,
Symatuk Itorcheak;
Sandra Omik;
Sandra Inutiq.

The one-time program, a partnership between the Akitsiraq Law School Society, Nunavut Arctic College, and the University of Victoria's faculty of law, provides an opportunity for Inuit law students to stay in Nunavut and get a legal education.
