IQALUIT An Iqaluit woman has been charged with first-degree
murder following a fatal stabbing over the weekend.
Jeannie Manning, 42, of Iqaluit, was arrested Sept. 1 and charged
with killing Davidee Adla, 44, also of Iqaluit.
Around 3 a.m. that day, police received a report that a man had
just been stabbed at House 800, near the Capital Suites building
in Iqaluit's Lower Base area.
When emergency officials arrived they transported Adla, the victim,
to Baffin Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy on Adla is being conducted, but results will not be
released until the case goes to trial.
Manning was arrested at the scene. She will be transported to
the women's correction centre in Ft. Smith, where she will held
until her bail hearing in Iqaluit Oct. 2.
If convicted of first-degree murder, Manning will be sentenced
to life in jail with no chance of parole for 25 years.
Iqaluit RCMP are still investigating the stabbing. Because the
case remains open, officers declined to provide many details about
the incident, including details about the weapon, the number and
location of Adla's wounds, and whether alcohol was a factor.
Adla's death is Iqaluit's first homicide this year.
