Frequently asked questions about Nunatsiaq News

What is Nunatsiaq News?
Nunatsiaq News is an English-Inuktitut weekly newspaper that has served the people of [Nunavut] and the Nunavik region of Arctic Quebec since 1973.

Where is Nunatsiaq News?
Nunatsiaq News is based in Iqaluit, a town of nearly 5,000 people at the end of Frobisher Bay on Baffin Island. Known as Frobisher Bay until January 1, 1987, Iqaluit developed around the Crystal 2 air force base built by the U.S. Strategic Air Command in 1942.

Iqaluit, chosen by the people of Nunavut in a plebiscite held December 11, 1995, is the capital of the new territory. It's now the home of Nunavut's new legislative assembly building, and the head offices of Nunavut's eleven government departments.

By the end of 2000, the Nunavut's Department of Community Government is expected to grant city status to Iqaluit.

Almost all of our Inuktitut copy is produced in syllabics, but occasionally, or upon request, we are able to produce material in Inuinnaqtun Roman orthography. We also publish material in French.

What is the circulation of Nunatsiaq News?
Nearly 7,000 copies of Nunatsiaq News are sold or distributed free every Friday throughout the three regions of Nunavut — Baffin, Keewatin, and Kitikmeot.

Through an arrangement with Arctic Co-operatives Limited, Nunatsiaq News is available in every Inuit community in Nunavut with has a co-op.

Through an arrangement with the Fédération des coopératives du Nouveau-Québec, about 3000 copies of Nunatsiaq News are distributed among the Inuit communities of Nunavik.
