KUUJJUAQ Last Friday in Kuujjuaq Nunavik's MP Guy St-Julien
announced the
federal government will spend $330,000 on the clean up of two
sites near
Quaqtaq. Most of the money will go to Makivik Corporation, the
project's
lead agent.
The agreement signed between Transport Canada and Makivik, Quaqtaq's
Tuvaaluk Landholding Corporation and Environment Canada will cover
the
restoration of the Cape Hopes Advance weather station and the
Quaqtaq
radiobeacon site.
The Cape Hopes station was shut down in 1972. According to a prepared
press
release on the agreement, the site's remaining buildings will
be stabilized
or demolished, and debris, barrels, equipment and tanks removed
from Quaqtaq's
landfill. Land contaminated by petroleum products will be decontaminated
on site.
Oil-contaminated soil at the radiobeacon site will be excavated
and treated
near Quaqtaq's landfill. Transport Canada will coordinate this
work with Nav
Canada, the site's current manager said.
Local workers are expected to do most of the clean-up work, and
will receive
training in occupational health and safety, management of hazardous
substances, and heritage preservation.
