IQALUIT — People came to "take a hike" and enjoy a barbecue at Sylvia Grinnell Park in Iqaluit, Saturday, to celebrate Canadian Parks Day, even though the weather didn’t co-operate well and mosquitoes were out.

Parks all across Canada were participating in Canadian Parks Day celebrations. The theme was, as it is every year, "Take a Hike," said Richard Wyma, the manager of parks and conservation for the Nunavut government.

Last year, 266 parks across Canada participated in the celebration and more were expected to be involved this year, he said.

Wyma said an access road farther into Sylvia Grinnell Park would be finished as far as the river and a camp area will be built.

People from the young offenders centre facility are helping to build a short access road with a small train, picnic tables and fire-pits by a yet-unnamed lake, he said.

Plans for the expansion of Sylvia Grinnell Park were made about three years ago, Wyma said.

Bridge across river?

Wyma said his department hopes to build a bridge across the river and build some trails reaching as far as the point near Qaummaarviit Park, which contains remains of old Thule dwellings.

But the Nunavut government’s land claim obligations have to be met before there is any more park development, he said.

Work on a parks program for Nunavut also needs to be done, Wyma said. Issues to consider include what parks are, why they are needed, whether they should be developed, and potential impact on hunting and fishing, he said.
