IQALUIT The Iqaluit John Howard Societys childrens breakfast and lunch program may be another step along the way towards re-opening as a result of recommendations made at an Iqaluit Town Council meeting June 11.
The Iqaluit Council sent three recommendations made by its Niksiit commitee back to the committee for reconsideration.
The Niksiit Committee is in charge of recommending how to spend Iqaluits share of grant money from the federal Brighter Futures program. Brighter Futures is an initiative aimed at improving the health and well-being of children.
The Iqaluit Council will ask the Niksiit Committee to take its administration fee, which is 5 per cent of the Iqaluit allocation, and try to pare down the three recommended amounts to find an extra $50,000.
The committee was requested to then bring its recommendations back to the next Iqaluit Town Council meeting.
If the Niksiit committee can squeeze out an extra $50,000, the money may then be given to the John Howard Society for running of its childrens breakfast and lunch program.
The committee had recommended that Brighter Futures grants be approved by the Town for: $40,500 for a librarian for Iqaluits elementary and middle schools, $36,000 for a special tutor-counsellor for Inuksuk high school, and $36,000 for classroom support at Nakasuk elementary school.
The Brighter Futures allocation for Iqaluit for this year is about $376,000, which includes a 5 per cent administration fee of about $18,800.
