IQALUIT — A highlight of the year for Qikiqtarjuaq’s first wolf cub pack was a campout this spring at Kivitoo, a well-known outpost camp and DEW Line site near their community.
The group of eight-to-10-year-old girls and boys spent their time igloo-building, ice fishing, cooking their own food, hiking, sliding and singing around the campfire, says Rodney Corkum, the leader of the group. They were accompanied on the trip by an elder, and other leaders.
Throughout the year the group has taken day-trips out on the land in November, and enjoyed activities related to spirituality, drama, arts and crafts, Scout history, citizenship and local culture.
Li ie Anaviapik, Grant MacDonald, Rebecca Harckham, Louise Vuillermin and John Ayaruaq of Rankin Inlet also provided leadership to the group, Corkum said.

"We worked as a team, worked collectively," he said.
Corkum, a teacher in Qikiqtarjuaq, formerly known as Broughton Island, said he started the group last September to provide something to do for young people in the community.
Corkum said he completed training last summer in Ontario in preparation for starting a Boy Scout group.
Although he is leaving Qikiqtarjuaq, Corkum said the group will continue under the leadership of John Ayaruaq, who plans to increase the number of enrollments of the group from 20 to 30 children.
"It’s just nice to see it’s going to continue," Corkum said.
