Sami reindeer herders want help

MAUKEN, Norway —The Sami reindeer herders of Norway want to start a letter campaign to draw attention to their situation.

Stine Benedicte Sveen, a student at the University of Tromsø, said any concerned individuals can write letters to the addresses that follow, and forward copies to her address.

"Norway internationally has played a leading role in the promotion of Fourth World (indigenous) interests," Stine said. "All the same, the Sami as an indigenous people in Norway have no exclusive rights to their lands. In autumn 1999, the U.N. Committee on Human Right even expressed its concern that the native land use in Norway doesn’t have any special protection from competing forces."
